Rules and Application Guidelines

Students interested in applying for this competition should provide a notice of intent to audition via electronic mail by January 27th, 2012 to: StacLLendt@gmail.com. This notice should contain the name of the applicant, grade in school, and instrument. Following this submitted notice, the applicant should obtain and complete the application (see above).

The first round of auditions will require a submitted recorded performance along with a completed application form and two letters of reference. After a preliminary round of judging is completed, finalists will participate in a mandatory "live" audition to be held on the afternoon of Sunday, February 26th, 2012.

The winning musician will be selected shortly thereafter and will be notified by February 27th, 2012. Receiving the award is conditional upon the winner being available and committed to participating in dress rehearsal dates, April 15th & 22nd, and the performance date of April 29th, 2012.

Applicants are encouraged to select from works found on the Northwinds Symphonic Band High School Solo Competition Music Repertoire List and must submit an audio recording of their performance on the chosen selection(s). All submissions must include piano, band, orchestral, or SmartMusic accompaniment. Works not found on the list must be approved for use by the Northwinds Symphonic Band Solo Competition committee prior to the submission of an application.

Along with the initial audition recording, a completed application form and two (2) reference letters from your music teachers are required. Reference letters should specifically reflect the applicant's musical ability and skills, especially those related to solo performance.

It is imperative that any literature performed must be representative of the student's ability on his or her instrument. Band accompaniment must be available for any literature performed.

*"Available" is defined as:

    • Currently available in the Northwinds Symphonic Band library, or
    • Obtainable from the student's school band library, or
    • In print and readily available for purchase or rental, or
    • Otherwise obtainable by the student(s)

Each selection submitted for the audio audition must be recorded straight through with no editing. To reiterate: all submissions must include piano, band, orchestral, or SmartMusic accompaniment. The best recording quality possible is recommended. Applicants may submit a cassette tape or CD recording of their audition. Video recordings will not be accepted.

Please limit the unedited recording to no more than 10 minutes in length.

Each recording must be clearly labeled with applicant's name, instrument, and recorded musical selection(s) – (complete title, movement(s), composer/arranger, and type of accompaniment). Submitted recordings will not be returned.

All application materials, including the completed application form, an unedited audio recording, and two letters of reference, must be postmarked on or before Friday, February 10th, 2012.
